National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

In 2004, 2006, and in 2008 the University of Waterloo participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).  NSSE is a survey that is administered through the Indiana University Centre for Postsecondary Research.  The survey is sent out to Undergraduate students in their first-year or their graduating year and the survey asks questions about activities and participation of the student in relation to their University.  The questions measure the degree to which students are engaged in their learning process and are divided into 5 different benchmark categories:  Level of Academic Challenge, Active and Collaborative Learning, Student Faculty Interaction, Enriching Educational Experiences, & Supportive Campus Environment. 

The Means Reports provide a capture of the average University-wide responses as compared to three peer groupings, the Frequencies Reports provide counts of each response as compared to our peers, and the Benchmark Report compares UW performance to our peers in each of the five NSSE benchmarks. 

UW has participated in NSSE as part of two different consortiums.  In 2004 we participated in a consortium with all the G10 Universities (now the G13), and in 2006 and 2008 we participated in a consortium with all Ontario Universities. As a consortium, we were able to add some additional questions to the survey, and those results are also available below:
